Children’s Mental Health Week: A Success Story

This week we are marking Children’s Mental Health Week by focusing on why we care about the mental health  of children across the north coast and throughout Northern Ireland.

On social media we shared a worrying statistic from research carried out by Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People in August 2021. The New and Better Normal Report stated that 41% of Primary 7 respondents and 52% of 16-year-olds feel their emotional health worsened during the pandemic.

But with the right support, we can help our children to turn these worrying statistics into success stories. Here’s a success story from one of our teenage clients.

A young teenager was referred to Compassion Counselling due to underlying anxiety and stress as a result of a bullying situation. This had a significant impact on the client and family.  After accessing counselling support for the teen and his mum, the teenager is now able to use strong coping strategies taught in counselling.

The teen has been able to look at issues and triggers and is now implementing selfcare, which has resulted in tactics to cope with situations which serve as a trigger. Counselling has shown the teen they can cope and overcome difficult thought patterns safely.
