John Moves into his Forever Home

When we brought you the story of John, who in his 80s was facing the prospect of homelessness after his landlord informed him he wanted to sell his property, we were overwhelmed by the response from the North Coast community. John had been referred to us by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive after he presented to them as homeless.

Working in conjunction with the dedicated staff of the Causeway office of the Housing Executive, Vineyard Compassion was able to provide John with the help he needed, to temporarily rehouse him in an apartment in our Compassion Housing scheme.

At the time John told us: “If it hadn't been for my friends at Vineyard Compassion I would be on the sand dunes living in a tent"

Back in September this story received a huge response both in the local media and in our community and resulted in an outpouring of goodwill and concern for John. So, we are delighted to be able to bring you the news that John has now been given the keys to his new and permanent home.

During a time when statutory agencies are under scrutiny to deliver support to those in need, we would like to take this opportunity to highlight the excellent work carried out by the Causeway office Housing Executive who worked so quickly to provide John with the home he deserves.

John told us: "I was really over the moon! Although, packing my bags there was a tinge of sadness because I was comfortable and I would miss the conversations, but I'm still grateful that I can come to Open Door on Fridays (until someone tells me I'm not allowed anymore!)".

Programme Manager Miriam McAlister said:

“We are so pleased that we were able to step in and provide John with comfortable temporary accommodation. John has become part of our Compassion community and we look forward to welcoming him back to visit us at any time. Our door will always be open to John!”

“It is also great to note that John will now be close to his brother and sister-in-law. This is especially important as his brother may soon be moving into a care home which is only five minutes from his new apartment.

In the meantime, John has been invited to our annual Compassion Christmas dinner and we look forward to celebrating this new chapter with him.”

The final word goes to John who said: “Waow, Christmas is going to be good this year!”
