Celebrating 5 Years of Hope: Transforming Lives at the Hope Centre

Over the last few weeks we have been celebrating the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Hope Centre, our purpose-built facility dedicated to fighting poverty and restoring dignity to those in need.

To mark this momentous occasion, on Sunday 30 April, we opened our doors to people who had either generously contributed towards the building of the Hope Centre, given financial donations, or volunteered their time over the past five years. Tea, coffee, and delicious treats were provided, party poppers were popped but at the same time we wanted our celebration to be an opportunity to reflect.

Staff shared some of the individual stories and societal issues which have moved us over the years as we reflected with a sense of gratitude on the countless lives that have been impacted and changed for the better during the last five years. One of the most critical issues we have faced over the past year is the rise in homelessness among pensioners. It has been heart-wrenching to witness individuals who have spent their lives in long-term rental properties suddenly facing the prospect of homelessness. Relocating to our temporary emergency accommodation meant leaving behind familiar communities and downsizing to one-bedroom flats. We recognized the limitations they faced in finding future accommodation, as they were only eligible for one-bedroom properties. However, we refused to lose hope.

Leaving no stone unturned as we worked alongside partner agencies to provide secure homes for these elderly people. We also turned to prayer, as we sought solutions for these residents. Three of them had specific requests regarding the location they desired to live in, while two of them longed for a two-bedroom property to welcome their grandchildren. These requests seemed like distant dreams, but we held onto hope and trusted that something remarkable was about to unfold. And indeed, it did. As each of these residents moved out, we witnessed the miraculous. They were all housed in the precise locations they had hoped for, and two of them were even provided with two-bedroom properties. The power of prayer and the commitment to finding solutions transformed their lives and filled their hearts with newfound joy and security.

The impact of the Hope Centre extends beyond housing support. We envisioned a place where the community could gather, find solace, and support one another. Recently, we have been overjoyed to welcome local Ukrainian families every Saturday afternoon, many of whom had to suddenly leave their homeland as refugees due to the impact and dangers of the war. Together, they create a safe haven where they can build connections, find community, and navigate their lives here in Northern Ireland while waiting until it is safe to return home. Through this small group setting, we witness the power of connection and the transformative journey of healing and restoration. The Hope Centre stands as a beacon of hope, responding to the evolving needs within the community and restoring hope to individuals who had almost given up on their dreams.

As we reminisce about the building of the Hope Centre, one particular memory stands out—the day we poured the concrete floor. Before this crucial step, we invited our friends and colleagues to write down their prayers and dreams for the future of the Hope Centre on post-it notes. We gathered together and prayed over these heartfelt hopes, burying 100’s of them within the ground beneath the floor at the main entrance. We prayed for peace, safety, and guidance for all who would step through the doors of the centre. Looking back now, we are humbled by the impact those prayers have had on our community.

Countless visitors have shared that they felt an overwhelming sense of peace when they entered the doors into the café environment of the Hope Centre. This space has become a sanctuary—a place where burdens are lifted, and worries fade away. It has become a haven for those seeking solace and a fresh start. As we celebrate our 5th anniversary, we reflected on those initial prayers that shaped our journey, and we invited everyone to dream and pray for the future of the Hope Centre and the community we serve.

Today, as we stand in awe of all that has been accomplished, we recognize that the journey is far from over. There is still work to be done, lives to be changed, and hope to be restored. We are eternally grateful to every volunteer, donor, and supporter who has walked alongside us, pouring their love and compassion into the vision of the Hope Centre. Together, we will continue to be a beacon of hope, transforming lives and spreading compassion across the North Coast.

Happy 5th anniversary, Hope Centre! Here's to many more years of making a difference and inspiring hope in the hearts of all those who walk through our doors from all across the North Coast.
